To the untrained eye, plasticine is plasticine. But the professionals there are a thousand different varieties. Some are hard, some are soft and some are crumbly. Some are even sticky, but every animator likes there plasticine slightly different. You can’t overcomplicate things because too many different colours blended together and too many different varieties can create a mess.
